Journey is an original adventure story that puts the audience in the centre of the action by combining some very new, and some very old technologies!

The worlds we are creating for Journey combine intricately detailed physical sets, with beautiful 3D animation.  The latest Augmented Reality technology overlays creatures, characters and animated effects into the physical environment – presenting audience with an amazing combination of digital and analogue content, and guiding them creative activities and challenges as they explore this underground fantasy world.

Our story is inspired by Jules Verne’s classic Journey to the Centre of the Earth, in which a group of adventurers solve a mysterious riddle that opens a doorway to an amazing subterranean world.  But, after entering this world, the group finds themselves trapped - the only way to escape is to keep going deeper - into the worlds beneath the Earth, and into the mystery at the heart of it all.

Our Journey is set in Arena’s home city of Bendigo, where thousands of kilometres of abandoned mining tunnels that lie right beneath the city, provide the perfect setting for a whole new journey into a world below.

Journey is designed to spark children’s imaginations through all of their senses. The physical meets the digital, meets narrative, meets creative participation. That is the rare combination that defines the experience of Journey.

Arena Theatre respectfully acknowledges the Dja Dja Wurrung people, and the Taungurung Peoples of the Kulin Nation, the first peoples of country on which Arena Theatre stands. We pay our respects to all of Bendigo's First Peoples, and to their ancestors and elders. Indigenous sovereignty has never been ceded and we acknowledge that we continue to make art on what always was and always will be, Aboriginal land.
