Country & Belonging
Created by Annie Brigdale

An artistic school residency that develops intercultural competencies.

What does 'Country' mean to you?

Children hear Acknowledgements of Country all the time. They hear it at school, at sports and at gatherings inside public spaces. Do students have a personal connection to what they hear and say? Do they have any investment in it, or is it just 'received information' crafted by adults and prescribed to children? This residency explores and personalises children’s understanding of the Acknowledgement of Country.

The students work with a variety of art forms including First Nations forms of visual arts and weaving, and contemporary art forms such as writing, video, audio, and digital technologies.

The Country and Belonging residency concludes with an exhibition and  celebration of the work. This event is attended by the whole school community.

The first iteration of Country and Belonging was in Bendigo, in partnership with California Gully Primary School.

Created by Yorta Yorta artist Annie Brigdale, with Christian Leavesley, Tahli Corin and Hermione Merry. Technical support by James Bodin.

Mapped to Intercultural Capability / Levels 3 and 4 / Cultural Practices.
